This experience was followed by volunteering on an Action Space programme in East London, joining the Board as Trustee in 1999 and then Chairman since 2005.
My earlier general experience with the ILEA and GLC in the 70's and 80's in Education and Housing had shown me the importance of help tailored for the specific needs of vulnerable people, if public social policy was to make a meaningful impact. But none of this prepared me for the inspirational impact of giving people the means to express themselves through art which disability denies them in other respects, and being able to show their challenging and beautiful work.
