Claudette joined the Action Space studio in Clapham in October 2010. She was a true and dedicated artist. She spent all her spare time drawing and creating works of art, as well as producing work in a studio environment.

Claudette had certain themes she would explore in her artwork, often stemming from her catholic upbringing. She would draw a tree with apples from the Garden of Eden nearly every week. Over Christmas she created a series of 3d angels constructed out of paper with fabulous woolly hats and necklace accessories.

Her artwork was frequently about herself and she created many self-portraits. Sometimes Claudette would begin drawing someone sitting near her but it would then develop into a self-portrait, morphing other people into herself. She loved the Simpsons and frequently drew pictures of the Simpsons characters, especially Lisa Simpson. Claudette would draw Lisa and fuse herself into the drawing, becoming part of the character.

Claudette’s approach to drawing was unique. She developed a bold and confident style that was completely her own. She had that amazing urge to create and was so full of ideas she often didn’t complete a piece of work, keen to move onto the next drawing. Many of the pieces being exhibited may seem like works in progress but to Claudette they were finished.

Sadly, Claudette died before she was able to exhibit any work through Action Space, so we have brought together a show of her work to remember this truly exceptional artist. The exhibition also showcases artwork produced at home and at Workshop 305 in Wandsworth.
